Tips to Help Improve Core Strength

As dancers, we all get told to improve our flexibility, to straighten our legs and point our toes, but too often, improving core strength is forgotten in the journey to becoming a better dancer.

Your core includes all muscles in your mid section, including abdominal muscles as well as lower back and hip muscles.

Having good core strength helps with stability, balance, posture and strength, meaning holding your turns, landing your leaps and your overall dancing ability will improve.

Here are a few exercises to help achieve this:

1. Crunches and sit ups

2. Twist crunches

3. Planks

4. Glute push-ups

5. Burpees

Try to do these exercises 3-4 times a week, and gradually increase the rep frequency when you feel ready.

Doing these exercises consistently, will ensure you gradually improve your core strength. This will mean you will see a significant improvement in not only your dancing, but in your day to day activities. Saying this, it's important to understand that these changes won't be seen overnight, as with most strength exercises. It's important to be patient with yourself and your body. Give it time to become the best it can be, and in the end, your hard work will pay off.
